Electric Toothbrushes 101

Technological innovations and advancements are making life easier for folks all around the world, and dentistry is no exception! In the last few years, we’ve seen dental technology revolutionize the way we care for our teeth, both in our office and at home. One of the more widespread and popular innovations is the electric toothbrush. Many of our patients ask us if they should be using an electric toothbrush, so we want to talk about the ways in which our patients can benefit from using an electric toothbrush.

How Do Electric Toothbrushes Work?

Electric toothbrushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the general idea is that they automate the brushing motion on your teeth so all you have to do is make sure the brush is in the right place and the right amount of time.

Many electric toothbrushes come with a timer that will help make sure you’re brushing for the recommended amount of time – two whole minutes, twice daily! Often, electric toothbrushes will have different modes – for example, one designed for sensitive teeth or one designed to whiten teeth.

Should I Buy an Electric Toothbrush?

While we’re not advocating that all of our patients throw out their conventional toothbrush and rush to purchase an electric one, we do believe that electric toothbrushes are the better option for most people. While it is certainly possible to get a thorough clean with a regular toothbrush, electric toothbrushes can ensure that you’re using the correct technique for optimum results.

For example, our patients who don’t have as much manual dexterity might benefit from an electric toothbrush as it would allow them to thoroughly clean those hard-to-reach teeth. Or perhaps you’re just bored with your dental routine and using an electric toothbrush would bring back a little excitement – that’s okay too!
