As part of Royal Oak Family Dental’s preventative dental care we offer oral cancer screenings. An oral cancer screening is one of the most effective ways to discover malignant growths in the early states. According to the American Dental Association approximately 49,750 will be diagnosed with oral cancer and cancers of the throat, tonsils and back of the tongue in 2017.
While Dr. Flesher at Royal Oak Family Dental will do all he can to detect signs and symptoms of oral cancer, there are also things you can be doing to lower your risk for oral cancer.
- Avoid the use of tobacco products. Tobacco products include: cigarettes chew or snuff, pipes or cigars. All forms of tobacco play a role in oral cancers.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of getting oral cancer.
- Avoid exposing your lips to the sun’s harmful rays. Always apply lip balm that contains sunscreen to protect your lips and avoid the risk of getting oral cancer.
While avoiding these items is helpful, you’ll also want to incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet. This low-fat and high fiber diet may help reduce your cancer risk.
